Nov. 2, 2010 - PRLog -- Singing Rooster uses typical fundraising strategies like grant writing, special events, capital campaigns, and planned giving BUT... they're especially proud of raising funds by selling Haitian coffee.

Selling Haitian coffee provides partial funding for their projects and they feel they're teaching the world about the excellence that already exists.  According to the Rooster's coordinators, promoting an existing Haitian product is NOT just icing on the cake - it's vital to their mission of Haitian dignity and autonomy.

“We’ve pragmatic and wanted to help Haitians help themselves, so we focused our efforts on coffee farming,” said co-founder Molly Nicaise.  According to Nicaise, Haiti already has a fledgling coffee infrastructure that won't require years of development; their assumption is that grants providing minimal structure and assistance will have quick impact to an economy that needs fast but lasting solutions.

“When you’re in the midst of helping a nation that struggles, you’re not thinking about nonprofit paperwork,” said Nicaise.  She went online to find advice and gave up after all resources promised a quick 1, 2, 3-step solution and then asked for charge card information.

After days of writing, and assistance from a friend, the paperwork was submitted, fingers crossed, weeks went by and all was forgotten.  “We received notification several months later and were thrilled with the news,” said Christophe Nicaise, co-founder of Singing Rooster.  He added that they had a couple of much deserved cocktails that evening.
