New Knowledge Base For Spermicide Users Launched

RDO Medical, a Warwickshire based medical supply company is pleased to announce it has just launched an online resource for users who wish to check out their options for spermicide and diaphragm gels.

Nov. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- According to Dr Jamall, Director of RDO Medical, women around the world have found themselves with less and less options for finding spermicide, the contraceptive gel which is applied to diaphragms and cervical caps in order for them to be efficient. "Quite simply the manufacture and distribution of spermicide has nose dived over the last 15 years with several brands completely disappearing and very few new products being launched". Dr Jamall suspects he know the reason why, "The hormonal pill has been pushed at a government level in so many countries that it's sadly now seen as the one stop, quick fix solution for family planning issues. This leads to lower sales of spermicide and spermicide based products making some brands uneconomical to their manufacturers". Where as a cervical cap or a diaphragm can last for several years of use making them a very cheap and accessible form of contraception, they're rendered useless without easy access to spermicide.

The Hormone Free Alternative
Aswell as filling an important social gap for affordable and reversible contraception, barrier contraceptives which depend upon a spermicidal element are also an important member of the non-hormonal contraceptive family. The number of women whose bodies reject hormone based contraceptives has always been significant but now with so many health product becoming "natural" and "environmentally friendly" it was only a question of time until women started looking at natural contraceptives for their environmentally friendly bodies. By not using hormone based contraceptives the women on this new bandwagon avoid passing thousands of litres of hormone contaminated urine into the water cycle every year. An alternative is still needed, enter the resurgence of barrier contraception and its trusty partner, spermicide.

The Nonoxynol-9 Issue
Spermicide however took a big PR hit when the World Health Organisation (WHO) launched a negative report on Nonoxynol-9 (N-9), the active ingredient found in most spermicide. It's use as a lubricant and secondary level of protection integrated on the outer side of condoms was criticised as causing vaginal abrasions which in turn increased the risk of sexually transmitted diseases (STD's) including HIV through those abrasions. The bad PR surrounding N-9 caused a downturn in spermicide sales until natural alternatives were able to reach the market place. ContraGel Green is one such alternative which is leading a resurgence and adding variety to the market place.

So What's Safe and What Should We Go For?
That's exactly the question that RDO Medical wants to help answer with their new website www.buyspermicide.com.
Dr Jamall explains, "Every women with whom we speak regarding barrier contraception asks about which spermicides she should use. Nonoxynol-9 in many respects is safe and in some countries it's given away for free through state healthcare systems so it can still be a sensible solution. Also there are Lactic Acid based formulas such as ContraGel and even home-made recipes for mixing Aloe Vera with lemon juice! With the new website we aim to pool all of the relevant information about all of the options out there including supplier details to allow women to choose the right product and find out how to buy it".

RDO Medical invites manufacturers and distributors of spermicide to contribute details of their products to help build a full and complete online resource of available spermicide.
