Oct. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Wormleysburg, PA - Imagine the hiss of tires on a wet street - the honks of taxi horns and the clunks of wheels on manhole covers – lights from huge advertisements flashing in your face as you walk quietly back to the subway alone late at night after a show – Dave Brubeck and his jazz piano playing in your mind. Such are the sounds and experiences imagined when viewing the work of New York artist Jeff Pullen. Jeff is a master of the New York street scene, using construction materials such as brick, wood panels and louvres as his canvasses. The bigger the better! And the mixed media materials only serve to add a third dimension to what otherwise would be superb two-dimensional paintings. Simply put, paintings of buildings look great on building materials!

Pullen's Broadway scenes are the highlight of his “New York Illusion and Reality” show at West Shore Gallery in Wormleysburg. The famous Marquis Theatre at 1535 Broadway is featured in both "Finally Silence" and "How I Hate to be Alone". Advertisements, buildings and lights reflected on the wet street give an abstract feel to these architectural compositions. Corporate brands such as Swatch, McDonald's, Maxell, Kodak, HSBC, and others add contemporary elements, converting capitalism into colorful components. "King of the New York Streets" seems as wide as Broadway, and tempts you to dodge the oncoming cabs. "Chance Meeting" is dominated by the McDonald's logo hanging over the umbrella of a slumped pedestrian scurrying away from the limelight into a dark corner, down the steps and onto the train.

New York's Upper West Side Brownstones are featured in several works on display. All capture the side streets of quieter parts of town, emphasizing the windows, doors, steps and railings of these late 19th century treasures. The bricks and louvres add depth and texture to these pieces. The over-sized piece "Nice Day to Start Again" with its tree and deep shadows is exceptional with its contrasts of light and dark. "Speaking Secret Alphabets" contrasts bright orange and red flowers against the dull beige buildings and gray sidewalk, dampened by a rain.

Pullen's cityscapes are 21st century time capsules, depicting soaring towers, achieving a depth of dimension due to the mixed media. "From All Four Corners" captures an incredible view similar to that seen atop Rockefeller Center. The inconsistently lit lights of the seemingly endless rows of skyscrapers depicts New York City at its late evening finest. The corporate logos and bright lights of street level are dwarfed by the immense towers of this powerful metropolis. "Through Canyon Walls" is like a collection of model skyscrapers. You feel like you could touch the concrete and steel. "The Times Have Changed" is a daytime view of the highway and towers near the George Washington Bridge. Some day it will provide a view into the past for future visitors to the Museum of Modern Art – answering the question – 'What was New York like in the early 21st century?”
