INSITE antiques & design will present new drawings by the nationally recognized Northern California artist Julia Couzens.  Couzens will be showing a series of drawings fabricated from tape on vellum.  These innovative drawings are comprised entirely of layered fragments and tiny sections of tape, and refer to 18th Century tapestry, fingerprints, webs, nests, and the unpredictable restructuring of a digital aesthetic.  

“I draw with scissors and a matt knife. For several years now I’ve used pieces and scraps of cut tape to conjure linear rhythms and visual sequences – my personal Morse Code.  The graphic points, dashes, and curls are my attempt to telegraph currents of energy that I see in the world – the unraveling energy of tattered textiles, thickets and snatches of twigs, insect trails and thumbprints.”

Couzens’s work is widely shown in museums and galleries throughout the United States.  Her work is represented in the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts of the Fine Arts Museums, San Francisco; Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; Crocker Art Museum, Sacramento; University Art Museum, Berkeley; Weatherspoon Art Gallery, North Carolina; and Yale University.  Couzens has been honored with a visual artist fellowship from The Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, New York and Art Matters, Inc., New York. She received her M.F.A. from the University of California, Davis in 1990.  Couzens lives and works on Merritt Island near the Sacramento River delta community of Clarksburg.
