The aim was to use evolving computer and communications technology to improve the operating performance of distribution systems. Initially, a few small scale pilot projects were initiated by utility companies to test the concept. In the 1980s, several major pilot projects were funded. By the 1990s, the technology had matured and resulted in several large and small projects at various utility companies. It was expected that most utility companies would embark on large-scale distribution automation.
