Rahman will discuss her first published book of poetry entitled, “Black Hair in the 21st Century Poetry that Gets to the Root of the Problem”, on Thursday October 27th 2010.
By: Jeanette Michelle Rahman uses poetry to summarize how black hair was perceived during Pre-colonial Africa, Slavery, Civil rights movement of the 1960’s, Black Power Movement of the 1970’s, Black Hair lawsuits of the 1980’s and the Don Imus Controversy at the beginning of the new millennium. Rahman’ R.J. Rahman graduated from Garfield High school in Seattle Washington were the legendary Quincy Jones, Jimi Hendrix, marital artist Bruce Lee and the Rap artist Ishmael Butler known as Butterfly from the 90’s group Digable Planets all attended. In addition to being a writer, poet, and motivational speaker she is also an accomplished fine artist and the first African American artist to have a permanent collection of prints on the campus of Western Washington University where she is an alumnus. R.J began to fill up journals with poetry about Spirituality, Love and Hair. She became motivated to publish the hair poetry that accumulated over the years after viewing the Don Imus talk radio incident that occurred back in April of 2007. While writing her book of poetry Rahman was inspired by the courage of India Ire and Chris Rock. Rahman's interview was originally scheduled to air on the Dark Mantis internet Talk show on Wednesday, September 15th 2010, but due to untimely events that occurred, Jeanette Michelle had to post pone the Dark Mantis Talk show and pre-scheduled interviews with up and coming guests.
