Follow on Google News | Renowned Psychiatrist brings the power of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to Five TownsDr. Edward Fruitman, Director of South Shore Neuropsychiatric Center in Hewlett, New York, and renowned veteran in his field, is helping pioneer a cutting-edge, alternative treatment for depression known as TMS (Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation).
By: Sharon DeGennaro The Neurostar® TMS system, which the FDA officially approved in October 2008 despite its being researched since the 1980s, uses highly focused, MRI strength magnetic pulses to stimulate neurons in the left prefrontal cortex. This in turn triggers the neurotransmitters in the targeted region, which activate the release of serotonin. TMS is typically administered five times a week over the course of four to six weeks for optimal likelihood and longevity of remission. The device is especially designed for clinical use on an outpatient basis. Patients can return to normal activity immediately after each treatment because unlike its predecessor, electro convulsive therapy or ECT, TMS is completely non-invasive and no sedation is required, nor do patients experience the cognitive side effects or memory loss experienced post-ECT. Similarly, TMS offers an alternative solution to the adverse side effects caused by most traditional anti-depressants including weight gain, dry mouth, upset stomach, or even sexual dysfunction. While clinical studies have found TMS to have about a 75 percent efficacy rate, Dr. Fruitman’s success rate easily exceeds that of the national average. This is largely due to his approach, which integrates counseling as an option during TMS treatments when most other practitioners might leave a patient to be alone with their thoughts or simply even watching TV. Dr. Fruitman is a Board Certified Psychiatrist and a nationally recognized expert in the field of psychopharmacology. Dr. Fruitman specializes in the treatment of Anxiety and Depression at South Shore Neuropsychiatric Center, where he is the first to introduce Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) to the Five Towns area of Long Island. http://www.southshoretms.com End
