Jewel-Osco® & FOX Chicago Raise Over $2 Million in Food and Cash to Support Hunger Action Month

Oct. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- (Itasca, Ill.) — JEWEL-OSCO, a leading Midwest food and drug retailer, and FOX Chicago News announced today that through their aggressive campaign to collect food and monetary donations to support Hunger Action Month, the companies have raised $2,035,608 in combined food and cash donations.

Hunger Action Month, which takes place annually in September and is sponsored by Feeding America, is aimed at raising awareness and encouraging advocacy to combat hunger across the nation.  

This is the third consecutive year that FOX Chicago News and JEWEL-OSCO have teamed up for their Hunger Action Month campaign, called “Give a Little, Feed a Lot.”  The proceeds, collected at 182 JEWEL-OSCO stores, will be donated to five area food banks:  the Greater Chicago Food Depository, the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, the Midwest Food Bank and the River Bend Foodbank.

“Combating hunger is a top priority of JEWEL-OSCO’s community outreach efforts, and we are extremely proud of the generosity from our customers that enabled us to make these important donations,” said Keith Nielsen, President of JEWEL-OSCO.   “Our area food banks play a critical role in helping local families in need and we were excited to partner with FOX Chicago News to help advance these efforts during Hunger Action Month.”

JEWEL-OSCO used a comprehensive in-store promotion program, which included signage, point-of-sale donations and food collection bins, to encourage donations. Several vendors joined the campaign, adding to the total food collected.  JEWEL-OSCO associates also contributed to the fight against hunger by hosting “bowl-a-thons” across the Chicago area, with the proceeds being added to the Hunger Action Month collections.  
Meanwhile, FOX Chicago broadcast weekly live interviews, news reports and public service announcements, to help raise awareness about the need for hunger relief and to encourage donations.
