Sofa so good for film

A sofa was the star of the show when a group of Coventry youngsters produced a film about the city to raise money for charity.

Oct. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- Students aged 14 and 15 from Bablake School and King Henry VIII School carried the settee to landmarks across Coventry while filming a documentary to encourage people to donate money to homeless charity, Shelter.
The task was part of the Future Leaders Programme managed by Coventry-based training and digital delivery organisation, Progressive Educational Tools (PET) which teaches schoolchildren teamwork and leadership skills as they organise fundraising activities.
Sam Dale, Harpreet Chohan, Lois Mia Davies and Nikolaus Elz from Bablake School were joined on the course by Gavan Jassi from King Henry VIII School and together they raised over £200.

Gavan said: “We took the sofa to Coventry Cathedral, the Herbert Art Gallery, Coventry Blaze Ice Hockey lockers and the venue where The Specials first played to demonstrate Coventry’s rich history and culture.

“Working with the cameras and making a documentary is not something I really thought about doing before but it was a lot of fun.

“PET came into my school and gave a talk about the Future Leaders course. The course encourages you to challenge yourself and work with others and it sounded interesting so I thought I would give it a go.”

Professional trainers Neil Tooth and Jude Bolas from PET ran the course alongside 16-year-olds Alexandra Clarke and Frank Sackey – who completed the course last year.

“It was really good working with Frank because he is just a year older than most of the people involved and had recently completed the same course so he knew exactly what we were going through,” said Gavan.

Mr Tooth is school area manager and lead trainer at PET.

He said: “This course is great for the kids because not only do they have a lot of fun while learning new skills, it allows them to earn qualifications such as equivalent GCSEs.

“They got really creative with the documentary and came up with some great ideas.

“It was also quite an adventure for them lugging this sofa all over Coventry so it is definitely something they will remember.”
