Oct. 19, 2010 - PRLog -- CINEAST: East London's Film Salon
7-9pm, Thursday 4th November, The Nunnery

CINEAST is proud to present an exclusive preview screening of ‘Civic Life’, a new film by London filmmakers Christine Molloy and Joe Lawlor. The work will tour selected UK cinemas following its premiere at Bristol's Brief Encounters Film Festival. Since July 2003 Molloy and Lawlor have worked on a unique and richly cinematic series of films made in negotiation with local residents and community groups.  At the centre of the work is the relationship these communities have to the environments in which they live and work.

The filmmakers will present their work in person. After the screening there will be time for questions and discussion.

American Mountains – The Last Thing
3rd – 19th December, The Nunnery

American Mountains - The Last Thing is the continuation of a group project, initiated earlier this year at Auto Italia South East.  The term 'American Mountains' here is evocative of a thing unreachable - distant in both time and space.  This incarnation will include a gallery exhibition, a series of texts, presentations and a website hosted by dreck.co.uk.

Exhibiting at The Nunnery are: Dave Charlesworth, Anna Bunting-Branch, Matthew Robinson, Jamie George, Richard Whitby, Rebecca Kressley and Siôn Parkinson.

Opening event: Thursday 2nd December 6.30 – 9.30pm (as part of Time Out First Thursdays)
Presentations and screening: Saturday 18th December, 2pm (a discussion of the exhibition by the artists involved)
Exhibition open: Friday – Sunday from 1pm to 5pm

The Balfron Project
7th – 23rd January 2011, The Nunnery

The Balfron Project is a large-scale photographic event taking place this Autumn at the Grade ll listed building, Balfron Tower, in Poplar. Led by Australian photographer Simon Terrill, the event will result in a spectacular, mural-sized photograph captured by a large format still camera. This final image will be exhibited at The Nunnery in January 2011, along with the accompanying research and related work by photographer Ollie Harrop. The Project will trace the connections between individuals, communities and the architecture they inhabit, providing a glimpse into the individual stories taking place within and around Balfron Tower, a stark symbol of urban utilitarianism.

Opening event: Thursday 6th January 2011, 6.30 – 9.30pm (as part of Time Out First Thursdays).
Symposium: Thursday 20th January, 6.30 – 8.30pm.  Simon Terrill and a guest panel of invited speakers will discuss the conception and undertaking of this ambitious project.
Exhibition open: Friday – Sunday from 1pm to 5pm

Apocalypstik
4th – 27th February, The Nunnery

Apocalypstick will be a multi-coloured riot of painting and sculpture, bringing together artists whose work is influenced by our everyday experiences of lurid popular culture. The work in this group exhibition of contemporary artists appropriates languages from the ever-morphing multi-media world to produce work that is often overloaded with information. There will be addional talks and events accompanying the exhibition.

Featuring work by: Jonathan Baldock, Shane Bradford, James Ferris, Richard Gasper, Ludovica Gioscia, James Howard, Sian Hislop, Dunstan James, Sinta Tantra, John Walter & Jeremy Willett.

Opening event: Thursday 3rd February, 6.30 – 9.30pm (as part of Time Out First Thursdays)
Exhibition open: Friday – Sunday from 1pm to 5pm
