Oct. 15, 2010 - PRLog -- National Day Nurseries Association (NDNA) today revealed it has published a free new resource ‘sustaining childcare on the journey from recession to recovery: case studies and good practice in local partnership working.’ Available free to download from NDNA’s website (http://www.ndna.org.uk), the publication shares how local authorities have successfully supported providers in managing during difficult economic times and contains a checklist local authorities and providers can consult to see how the sector can work in partnership during a downturn and into economic recovery.

Available to download from http://www.ndna.org.uk/local-authorities/LA-case-studies/sustaining-childcare-la-publication, the publication shares examples of where local authorities and providers have worked in partnership to strengthen provision against economic difficulties, for example through sourcing professional advice on business practice and marketing and use of sustainability funding.

Although there are indicators that the economy is moving toward recovery, many nurseries continue to report that they are feeling the effects of difficult times, including through increased debt, parents sending their children to nursery for fewer hours and increased difficulty in accessing finance. NDNA hopes that the free publication will inspire local authorities with cost-effective ways to support provision and also give providers ideas regarding how they can be supported to raise at meetings with their local authority. The partnership working checklist quickly summarises effective ways the sector can be supported in moving from recession to recovery.

Purnima Tanuku, Chief Executive of NDNA comments: “The economic climate continues to mean that running a nursery is even more challenging, and combined with issues in areas such as funding for the free entitlement, many providers continue to struggle to be viable. However, childcare is vital to economic recovery, as it enables parents to work or develop the skills for a new job or career. In addition, with local authorities having a duty to ensure there is sufficient childcare, it is vital that they look at how the local sector can be supported to avoid a lack of childcare. However, with the current spending constraints, local authorities and providers need to look at innovative, cost-effective ways that partnership working can secure sustainability, and this free resource provides hints and tips for doing this. NDNA is working with both providers and local authorities to help identify strategies that enable the sector to continue with its role in strengthening economic recovery, whilst delivering quality care and early learning for children.”
