Oct. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- If there is one town that defines Sardinia, it is Cagliari. You can see why it has been the capital city of Sardinia since Roman times for a reason, many visitors make it the first stop if they are planning to town the whole region. It is said that the city was built on seven hills and they were given names Sant’Elia, Bonaria, Monte Urpinu, Castello, Monte Claro, Tuvixeddu and San Michele. Seeing as it’s the capital city it shouldn’t be a surprise that you can find some of the best Sardinia villas here.

There are so many historic structures in this town, especially in the old parts of town. There is the Castello old quarter, which is home to the oldest medieval street in Sardinia. It lies on top of a hill and offers one of the best views of the whole city. Most of the city is contained in the city walls. The cathedral is a building that had to be restored in the 1930s on top of the former Baroque style into a medieval Pisan. The other attractions in this district are The National Archaeologiol Museum which has many Roman, Phoenician and Punic collections, as well as the Lion’s Gate - the main gate of the city and royal Viceroy Palace.

The Stampace District is another one of the old districts in Cagliari but is mainly home to a few churches such as the Saint Anne and Saint Restituta churches. But there is also something there that dates back further than the churches. This is a city that has a Roman archaeological site and has a Roman amphitheatre. This was built in the II century AD and most of the north east side of it has been preserved. The steps are carved into the rock as the ground is slated, the central underground.  In the past the maximum capacity of the amphitheatre was 10,000 spectators there would be demonstrations of animal hunting, public executions and gladiators that would have duels and battle until the death, just like in other cities and amphitheatres of the Roman Empire. Today it plays host too many concerts and theatrical shows and has kept its caves, walls and the terrace where VIPs would be to watch the games. The concerts are organised by Sardegna Concerti who have organised events throughout the year. The ancient Roman archaeological site is the Roman Dweling Villa di Tiggelio.

There are other attractions that may be of interest to you if you are visiting Cagliari. One of them is the San Benedetto market, an indoor market that was built in 1950 and is one of the ways to see the heart and soul from the people of Cagliari. It is the largest town market in the whole of Italy and is one of the largest in Europe. Here you find some of the freshest fruit and vegetable produce and right out of the water fish. The market has other stuff that will be of interest to you so don’t worry you will be able to find what you want in this fantastic city.
