Sardinia in the Autumn

Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- A land “left outside of time and history”, is what DH Lawrence said about Sardinia. This may still resonate today, outside of tourist season, Sardinians go back to their ancient ways.

As grape season begins in the August, Sardinia becomes littered with food festivals such as the Chestnut festival start, attracting many tourists from the world over, who come to stay in Sardinia villa, whilst enjoying the delicacies on offer throughout the Island.

Sailing and yachting remain popular activities throughout the Island, and with the sea remaining a warm temperature all water activities are welcome. Here there is a Caribbean like temperature, that can be enjoyed in ship less waters.

In the sixties, the Island served mainly as a refuge for rich elites, and this legacy is still apparent, with billionaire owned clubs catering to expensive tastes the island still gives out a strong  smell of money as it attracts the rich and famous still. Towns are filled with trendy boutiques stocking all the big designer names for those that are willing to pay for such items.

Yet in the off season you can spend as little or as much as you wish in Sardinia.

Furthermore this is an island of taste and there seems to be the strong feeling here that man made buildings should not outshine nature, but instead should compliment it.

Costa Smerelda is a rose coloured coast that stands just before a beautiful turquoise sea which is where the coast gets its name from. The geological backdrop here gives the land a dramatic beauty and it is not to be missed. Accordingly the architecture here is a smooth white, designed to suit the natural beauty.

Porto Cerva is the main point of Costa Smerelda, with a particularly colourful town centre, covered in pinks and tans, pale and illuminated by the sunlight. High end boutiques are scattered throughout the town, selling many of the big designer names like Prada and Gucci, a taste for fashion that the Sardinians have clearly picked up from their Italian cousins.

Then there is the town's marina and yacht club, heralding back to the reputation as a Billionaire's playground.

Throughout October the small bays around Costa Smerelda are particularly serene, free of tourist traffic and you can usually have the beaches more or less to yourselves.

Wine lovers will find Vigne Surrau a pleasant day out, only ten minutes away from the town and beautiful sweeping orchards and vineyards. In the Autumn the grape harvest has begun and you can see these areas fairly busy as they get on with their work, yet the cellar remains open for tours. This is a family owned business, representing a marked departure from the past when these establishments were owned by cooperatives.

According to those that run the winery a visit during the October offers the most calm for the visitor who wishes to sample the wine, without having to be packed in with many other tourists. In spite of being the time in which the workers are busiest it is also a time when the staff are best equipped for the more inquisitive visitor.
