Recently published research from Business Monitor International, "Russia Power Report Q4 2010", is now available at Fast Market Research

Oct. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI forecasts that Russia will account for 39.78% of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE)'s regional power generation by 2014, and will remain a net exporter of electricity to neighbouring states. CEE power generation in 2010 will have been an estimated 2,581 terawatt hours (TWh), representing a recovery of 2.3% from the previous year. We are forecasting a rise in regional generation to 2,936TWh by 2014, representing a rise of 13.8% during the period 2010-2014.

CEE thermal power generation in 2010 was around 1,294TWh, accounting for 50.1% of the total electricity supplied in the region. Our forecast for 2014 is 1,441TWh, implying 11.4% growth that reduces only slightly the market share of thermal generation to 49.1% - in spite of environmental concerns promoting renewables, hydro-electricity and nuclear generation. Russia's thermal generation in 2010 is an estimated 672TWh, or 51.89% of the regional total. By 2014, the country is expected to account for 50.03% of thermal generation.

Gas is the dominant fuel in Russia, accounting for an estimated 54.7% of 2010 primary energy demand (PED). It is followed by oil at 20.3%, coal at 13.2%, nuclear at 5.7% and hydro with a 6.3% share of PED. Regional energy demand is forecast to reach 1,472mn toe by 2014, representing 13.5% growth over the period 2010-2014. Russia's estimated 2010 market share of 50.20% is set to fall to 49.54% by 2014. In 2010, Russia will have accounted for an estimated 47.08% of regional nuclear energy consumption, with a forecast market share of 51.14% by 2014.

Russia is now ranked third behind Turkey in BMI's updated Power Business Environment Ratings, having remained ahead of Poland. Russia's current score reflects the vast size of the country's electricity market and infrastructure, a high level of GDP per capita growth, and a relatively low level of import dependence. Country risk factors undermine the industry scores to some extent. Turkey could be overhauled during the next few quarters and Poland should not be a threat from below.

BMI now expects Russian real GDP growth to average 4.3% per annum between 2010 and 2014. Russia's population is expected to fall from 141.9mn to 139.5mn over the forecast period to 2014, but GDP per capita and electricity consumption per capita are projected to increase by 85% and 18%, respectively. The country's power consumption is expected to increase from an estimated 872TWh in 2010 to 1,016TWh by the end of the forecast period, while theoretical export capacity should increase from an estimated 146TWh in 2010 to 152TWh in 2014, assuming 3.3% annual average growth in generation in 2010-2014.

We are forecasting an increase in Russian electricity generation of 31.1% between 2010 and 2019, which is towards the lower end of the projected range for the CEE region. This equates to 14.2% in the 2014- 2019 period, down from 14.8% in 2010-2014. PED growth is set to rise from 12.0% in 2010-2014 to 13.1% in 2014-2019, representing 26.7% over the entire forecast period. An increase of 44% in hydropower use during 2010-2019 is a key element of generation growth. Thermal power generation is forecast to rise by 17% between 2010 and 2019, with nuclear demand up 70%. More detail of BMI's long-term forecasts can be found later in this report.
