Oct. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Viral videos are all the rage and an exciting new way to share valuable content with clients and colleagues using a current, entertaining medium.  Viral videos become popular through the process of internet sharing.  Their name, “viral” indicates that these videos are spread quickly (like a virus) usually through video sharing websites like YouTube or social media networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.  You can embed a viral video or a viral video blog in your own daily blog or share a viral video using email.

Humour is often used in viral videos, but not always.  A viral video is any video passed electronically from person to person, no matter the type of content it contains. The increased availability of inexpensive video editing and publishing tools, as well as the wide use of camera phones and other video equipment make videos easy to create. With the wide use and availability of social networking sites like Twitter, Facebook and YouTube these videos are easy to share on the internet.

In the past, viral videos were usually created by consumers, were non-commercial and made with the intention of having families and friends view them.  However, this trend is changing as a number of businesses have discovered the wide-ranging reach of viral videos and have been tapping into the medium to increase their social networking marketing success.

As videos become more and more popular on the internet a number of companies are turning to viral videos as a part of their marketing campaigns.  Arguably one of the most successful viral video campaigns in recent history was done by Old Spice.  In these videos, the company’s spokesman, the Old Spice Guy (who was featured on their television commercials) made personalized videos for fans, prominent bloggers and random people.  In less than a week more than 180 videos were made and viewed approximately 5.9 million times, generating approximately 22 000 comments.  The viral video success of Old Spice is certainly inspiring and shows there is merit to including viral videos as part of your internet marketing campaign.

It is important to realize that a successful viral video campaign is not always easy to accomplish and many attribute the success of Old Spice in this medium to their new technique of responding to blogs, tweets and comments in real time through the creation of new viral videos.  This technique was extremely effective, but as of yet has not been replicated with as much success. It makes sense that the real time response was successful for Old Spice, considering that the medium of social networking is about discussing and sharing what is trending at a certain moment.  The popular content of this medium is constantly changing and in flux, which is why a real time campaign why so successful – it allowed Old Spice to keep up with the content and ideas of their consumers, while staying on the list of popular trends.

If you’d like to share in the spoils of viral videos a good way to start is to experiment with viral video blogging and create your own funny, entertaining and informative viral video blog.  Blogging is an extremely effective way to create inbound links to your site and a video blog will be much more interesting and entertaining for your blog followers than your normal blog posts, and is sure to create some additional buzz.
