The Cultural Heartbeat of Sardinia

A look at Nuoro the central city of Sardinia

Oct. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- In the eastern but mainly central part of Sardinia is the town Nuoro.  They say to get the real Sardinian experience that Nuoro is one of the key places that will show you one of the best examples.  One way of picking this up is that Nuoro is one of Sardinian areas where the locals still speak sardo, which is a standardised dialect of Sardinia.  Its a language that has been influenced by Spanish and Catalan.  The city has over 43,000 inhabitants and is the third largest province on the Island.  This is a city with some of the most authentic Sardinia villas on the island.  The City originally had two separate villages called Seuna and Santu Predu which were connect by a single alley.

It is the capital of the province of Nuoro.  It is the fifth largest city in Sardinia, though that hasn't stopped people visiting the city, as it is considered the culture capital of the region and has been coined with the name of Sardinian Athens or in Italian "Atene sarda".  To add to this it is the home town of the only Italian woman who won the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Nuoro lies on the slopes of Mount Ortobene, a mountain that is 1000 metres high but is surrounded by beautiful natural forests.  But even Mount Ortobene has a bit of culture to it, as on top of it is a religious statute of the Redeemer.  This is a bronze statue that was sculpted by Vicenzo Jerace and the reason why it was built was to celebrate the turn of the jubilee.  But this isn't the only place where you can see a statue like this in all regions there will be one.  There are statues on 19 mountains in total; there are 19 to represent the 19 centuries of Christianity.

Every year On August 29 a solemn Mass called Sagra del Redentore is celebrated with a festival being the closer of it, during which there is a parade of costumes, songs and traditional folk dances.  The whole event is a washed with colours.  The mountain is perfect for calm walks and picnics as the area is so natural, perfect for nature lovers.  It's so natural that you may even see the wildlife in their natural habitat; these include wild boars, weasels, martens and foxes.

In the old part of town which is a historic centre is the Sardinian Museum of Ethnography or as they call it the Museo Etnografico Sardo.  It is one museum that is highly recommended.  It is the largest ethnographic museum in Sardinia and the only museum that is a direct offshoot of the Sardinian region that focuses its research and documentation activities on the entire region.  The buildings of the museum were built in the fifties and sixties on the hill of Onofrio.  The town tries to preserve its history and culture which is why there are numerous monuments which are kept in good quality so visitors can see why the city is the cultural centre of Sardinia.
