Advisory (10/12): Alarming New Data Shows Widening Gap Between Wealthy, Poor in D.C. Metro Area

Media Advisory: Alarming New Data Shows Widening Gap Between Wealthy & Poor in D.C. Metro Area -- Report Finds Increasing Barriers to Success for Low-Income Women with Children

Oct. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- More than 20 percent of women-headed households in the D.C. metropolitan region are poor. The local gap between women’s and men’s earnings is 20 percent.  And the cost of full-time, center-based infant care is 52 percent of the median annual income for single mothers in the District. These statistics make it hard to believe that low-income women with families have any chance of becoming economically secure, a fact that is particularly disturbing in the nation’s capital, home to some of the wealthiest and most powerful people in the country.

Washington Area Women’s Foundation will be discussing key findings like these along with policy recommendations  from a new report via webcast on Tuesday, October 12 at 9:00 a.m. PDF copies of the report will be available at that time.
