Oct. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- Surfing and art tend to mingle in the town of Paia, a fast moving inlet of Muai, the kind of place where you can blink and miss something.

These beaches bring in surfers from all over the states attracted to the kaleidoscopic blue waters, glistening in the sun, leaving faint ripples in the water.  The white sands offer a great setting to relax in after hitting the water.

For many years this sugar town has been a respite for surfer types and the more laconic breed. Also according to many locals, certain wayward types of celebrities have also enjoyed these shores, names like Woody Harrelson, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson.

Though over recent years it has also become a seductive setting to young artists and now the relaxed surfer feeling coexists with a bohemian trendiest. The town now has a good number of galleries and some prestigious artists in residence such as Mary Mitsuda and Udo Noger.

The artists’ works have been attracting the attention of many international art collectors who come to the town on spending holidays, and also has been noticed by some of the most foremost institutions in America such as the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the San Francisco MOMA.

This has also led to the introduction of many boho-chic hotels and boutiques that cater to the Paia’s new refined type visitors. After being the stoner haven, Paia is now fast becoming one of the major spots for modern art.

In the 19th century this town was vital to Hawaii for its production of sugar, yet as the sugar industry waned its vitality, the town lost its position as an exporter of produce. Therefore in the 1950s the town became a wispy destination for hippies and defectors from capitalist American society. So while it attracted many hippies and wayward children, it also drew in a strong crowd of artisans.

It is Hawaii so naturally it flourishes with all the beauty you would usually associate with the South Pacific, the swaying palm trees and the sweeping greenery. Yet it is not so saturated with tourists and retains some sense of identity.

The sugar cane fields of yesteryear still remain, enveloping this enclave Maui. And it remains more or less the only town in this area at the north of the island.  For a good while it served as a stop up point for those getting fuelled up before making their way south of the island, now for those in the know it is a good destination in its own rite.

The town itself is relatively tiny, but it offers a lot, though it offers more to those happy top go with the flow. Very appealing is that you can ask most locals where something is and they’ll know straight away. Furthermore this means that you are quite likely to run in to one of its celebrated advocates, pop down to the local bar and it could well be Willie Nelson providing the entertainment.
