BENNINGTON — Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) will present on its accredited, comprehensive breast care program on Tuesday, Oct. 12, at 6 p.m. in Conference Room C on the second floor of the hospital.
Join members of the breast care program which treats women with breast cancer and benign breast disease. On hand will be: registered nurse and breast health navigator, Shannon Tatro; Dr. Charlene Ives, oncologist; Dr. Elizabeth Warner, surgeon; Theresa Keefer, the cancer center’s research program director; Dr. Marthe Ann Gabey, reconstructive and plastic surgeon; and Kristen Palmer, physical therapist.
The team members will walk a fictional patient through the breast care program’s alternatives, including topics such as digital mammography; surgical options; oncology, chemotherapy and radiation therapy; what a clinical trial is; breast reconstruction surgery; and how physical therapy can help a patient during and after treatment. There will also be time for those attending to ask questions.
SVMC’s breast care program is the first and only program to be accredited in the state of Vermont. The program has been awarded a three-year full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), a program administered by the American College of Surgeons. Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that agree to a rigorous evaluation and review of the program’s performance.
