A look at the legend of Hawai'i Loa... According To legend

Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- The legend of Hawai’i Loa goes that he accidentally happened to find the islands; he came from the land of the yellow sea of Kane.  He was the man that had organised a colonising expedition which had his family and also included eight skilled navigators.

Hawai'i Loam was well known for his fishing excursions many of which would last for months on end up to a year.  On his fairly large canoe which was called an island he, his crew, officers and navigators would roam the ocean.  One time they were on an excursion for so long that that his primary navigator Mikali'i told Hawai'i Loa to steer towards the eastern star as there was land as there would land, he also stated that the red star would guide them in the direction of those big stars as they resemble a bird because of this advice the red star was named after the navigator.

Hawai'i Loa listened to his advice and steered towards the most eastern island of the Hawaii island chain.  They went ashore and were surprised that they had found land which was so fertile and was beautiful, as it was filled with coconut trees and various other exotic plants.  Hawai'i Loa as chief gave the name of the island his name and decided to go back to the Land of the yellow fully knowing that they were going to return to Hawai'i as they found it to be a superior island than their native one and the only reason why they were returning was because they had left their wives and children. They filled up their Canoe with as much vegetables, food and fish as they could and returned to their native country.  So after he had returned to get his wife and children he set off again without looking back.

This time on their voyage they were guided by the morning star which was shining bright to their direction.  When they had arrived at the islands Hawai'i Loa named the islands after his children. At the time there was another island that was discovered by his eldest son Maui.  Hawai'i and Maui were the only two islands discovered at the time as the rest weren't formed from volcanoes yet and The other islands when they were formed and then discovered were named after his other son who were Kaua'i and his daughter O'ahu, each of whom settled on the island which grace their name.  The mountain on Kaua'i was named after Kaua'i's wife a place where he buried her.  All the other islands and districts were called after the first settlers

Many Hawaiians feel that it is a fairly realistic adaptation of the settling of the islands and that it makes sense and goes with current historical beliefs.  The legend also contains references to the other islands it does make it seem partially believable from an outsiders perspective, so its no wonder why many feel that this is an accurate portray of how the Hawaiian islands came to be, it was a far cry from Hawaii rentals, hotels and villas that you see today.
