Market Report, "Malaysia Insurance Report Q4 2010", published

New Financial Services research report from Business Monitor International is now available from Fast Market Research

Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- In this report, we have been able to include both final data for 2009, and to amend projections for the current year in order to take into account of H110 results released by major cross-border insurers in the Asia-Pacific region. Total insurance premiums in 2009 amounted to MYR32,411mn. This included nonlife premiums and general takaful (Islamic finance) contributions of MYR12,324mn. Life premiums and family takaful contributions amounted to MYR20,087mn. In 2014, the corresponding figures are projected to be MYR57,750mn, MYR21,697mn and MYR36,053mn. In terms of the key drivers of forecasts, we are looking for non-life penetration to rise from 1.78% in 2009, to 2.10% in 2014, and for life density to rise from US$208 per capita to US$350 per capita. BMI's proprietary Business Environment Rating for Malaysia is 63.5.

As in previous quarters, we have ranked major players in each of the two main insurance segments as they are seen by the organisation providing the data (which, in practice, is usually the regulator or the trade association). In Malaysia the three largest non-life companies- in terms of gross written premiums written - were Kurnia, Mitsui and Etiqa, with respective market shares of about 12%, 7% and 7%, respectively. Great Eastern continues to dominate the life segment, with a market share of 24%, though Prudential and ING each had market shares of around 14%. Over time, we hope to derive insights from observing how market shares change. We emphasise though, that a decline in share of gross written premiums is not automatically a negative indicator and indeed is often the result of a corporate decision to focus on more profitable business lines.

In this report, we provide a breakdown of the insurance sector by line - again, from the point of view of the regulator or the trade association. In Malaysia the largest non-life lines were land vehicles voluntary insurance (CASCO), fire, medical expenses and personal accident, and marine, aviation and transport.
