New Healthcare market report from Business Monitor International: "Oman Pharmaceuticals & Healthcare Report Q4 2010"

Oct. 4, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI considers Oman's pharmaceutical market to be relatively attractive to multinational pharmaceutical companies operating in the Middle East. Valued at OMR127mn (US$331mn) in 2009, drug sales have risen strongly in recent years on the back of strong economic performance - a result of energy driven wealth.

Per-capita expenditure on pharmaceuticals reached a value of US$116 in 2009 and is likely to top US$242 by 2014, a level comparable with more developed emerging markets, but still behind those in much of Western Europe and North America at present. Despite the country being receptive to foreign-made and novel pharmaceuticals, strict price controls are one of the main factors for this situation.

Oman's economic growth outlook remains positive, thanks to strong government spending growth, rising export volumes and an improving investment picture. That said, domestic demand is proving slow to recover, meaning that Oman could prove vulnerable to any worsening of the global picture. Nevertheless, BMI forecasts continued double-digit annual growth in pharmaceutical sales over the next five years. This will be supported by a changing epidemiological profile and greater access to advanced treatments.

The government is also becoming more active in supporting health initiatives such as immunisations. The health ministry is exploring the possibility of including more vaccines in its Expanded Programme of Immunisation (EPI). One recent addition was the 13-valent polysaccharide conjugate vaccine (PCV 13), Prevnar 13, in May 2010.

Oman has embarked upon a series of reforms to boost its local drug industry. The government was active in the creation of one pharmaceutical concern (namely National Pharmaceutical Industries (NPI)), in a bid to lower its reliance on US and European imports, as well as generic brands more recently sourced from other Gulf countries such as Egypt, Jordan and India.

Around half of all Omani exports go to Syria and various EU countries. Exports are predominately made up of pharmaceutical raw materials. The attempts by the Omani government to diversify its economy away from oil could see an increased focus on the drug sector, although exports remain minimal at present. Oman Pharmaceutical Products (OPP)'s US FDA approval for one of its antibiotic products should help drive exports, although it is likely that exports within the region will be a more sustainable source of long-term growth for the domestic sector.
