Jonathan Fagan, Managing Director of Ten-Percent Legal Recruitment, explains: "In 2006 firms were struggling to find conveyancing and wills & probate solicitors to help with rapidly expanding caseloads. Some larger scale operators were busy trying to capture the market and salaries were heading skywards. A 1 year PQE conveyancing solicitor could be attracting salaries of £35,000 in London and about £33,000 in the regions. This has changed dramatically ever since. At the moment the majority of firms who look to recruit will have a maximum budget of £30,000 regardless of the level of experience and ideally be looking for new recruits to be prepared to accept a commission based role paying around 25-35% of fees earnt on a monthly basis. As conveyancing and wills & probate currently makes up a substantial amount of the business of most smaller and medium sized firms on the high street etc.. this has had a massive effect on overall salary levels for the profession. If a 3 year PQE solicitor outside the larger regional and city firms is getting more than £40,000, they should be very happy. The majority of solicitors never make it to salaries much higher than this anymore, although this may well change when the market picks up.
