Sept. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- CINCINNATI – The American Cancer Society today gave funding to local medical centers to provide 880 mammograms over the next year to women who would not otherwise be able to access them because they are uninsured or underinsured. Cincinnati-area hospitals received $80,000 from the Society through funds donated to its Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk. This year’s walk will be on Sunday, Oct. 17 at Yeatman’s Cove on the Cincinnati Riverfront.

“The American Cancer Society provides the chance for life-saving early detection by funding these mammograms,” said Annette Shepherd, the Society’s breast cancer mission chair in Hamilton County. “Every woman should have access to a mammogram because it can catch breast cancer in its earliest, most treatable stages. The Society is thankful to our volunteers for raising the funds to make these mammograms possible.”

Receiving the funds are:
The Jewish Hospital, receiving $50,350,
Mercy Hospitals in Anderson, Clermont and Fairfield, receiving $10,440,
Tri-Health Hospitals, receiving $5,000,
University Hospital, receiving $5,000,
The Christ Hospital, receiving $3,050,
Fort Hamilton Hospital, receiving $3,050, and
West Chester Medical Center, receiving $3,050.

The Society recommends that women begin receiving annual mammograms after their 40th birthday. Some women, however, are unable to pay for mammograms because they are uninsured or underinsured. The American Cancer Society then uses funds collected by its volunteers to pay for mammograms for these women.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society’s family-friendly noncompetitive 5-mile walk to raise awareness and funds to fight breast cancer. It is the Society’s signature breast cancer event and the largest breast cancer walk of its kind in the nation. This year’s walk is expected to bring up to 12,000 walkers to Yeatman’s Cove in Cincinnati on Oct. 17. In it first 13 years, the Cincinnati event has raised nearly $5 million to save lives from breast cancer. All Making Strides events nationwide have raised more than $400 million since 1993.
