Sept. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Kane'ohe is located in the district of Ko'olaupoko on the island of O'ahu, and with a population of just under 35,000 it has the largest of several communities along the bay, and one of the two largest residential communities on the windward side of O'ahu. To access the Kane'ohe Bay you have to go via the public pier and the boat ramp. At the south end of the Bay is the Marine Corps Base Hawaii, with the town stretching along the bay to the base perimeter. In Hawaiian Kane'ohe means 'bamboo man', and according to Hawaiian folk tales a local woman had compared her husband's cruelty to the sharp edge of cutting bamboos.

Many years ago this would be an area well known for its agricultural roots, especially as rainfall was of a regular occurrence, but today it is more of a residential area with agriculture barely featuring in normal areas with the only crop that appears today being bananas. But what this does mean is that there will be loads of Hawaii rentals around the area.

There are three golf courses in Kane'ohe, the Pali Golf Course - which is a public golf course that is near the historic place where king Kamehameha the Great won the great battle that united all the islands of Hawaii, the Ko'olau Golf Club - which is privately owned but the general public can go on and it has been rated as one of the toughest challenges in America. The last one is the Bay view Golf Park which, just like the Ko'olau Golf Club, is privately owned but open to the general public and is pretty cheap.

Kane'ohe also has the beautiful Ho'omaluhia Botanical Garden, which is roughly over 400 acres. It is open daily and is free to visit. Established in 1982, it was built and even designed by the United States Army Corps of Engineers for flood protection. It is a botanical garden that is mainly has rainforest plants that comes from tropical regions that features all over the world, places such as Africa, India, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Melanesia, the Philippines and Polynesia. There is a special emphasis to conserve plants that are native to Hawaii and Polynesia. You can also go on free guided walk, which is said to be one of the best places to go for a picnic - so you can see why in Hawaiian its name means 'a peaceful refuge'. Also you can see a close up view of the steepled cliffs.

There are five islands within Kane'ohe bay, one of them is unique because it's entirely devoted to research and is owned by a nearby university. Coconut Island, more locally known as, Moku o Lo'e, is a 28 acre island used the Hawaii Institute of Marine Biology (HIMB) of the University of Hawaii. It was also used as the location used for long shots of the island in the popular television show Gilligan's Island. Access to this Island is restricted, though, so everyone can't go as they like.
