This special eBook goes through various steps and techniques to help each person learn how to knit, and find a new way to express their individuality and creativity, or to respond to a necessity.  Beginning to knit can be very daunting, but the experts at Knitting Daily have put together step by step illustrations and a detailed tutorial on how to learn to knit for beginners. It all begins with the two basic stitches, the knit stitch and the purl stitch.

“So you’ve decided you want to learn how to knit! Congratulations; I think you’ve made a great choice. Knitting is a centuries-old craft, mostly practiced out of necessity; if you wanted socks or a sweater, you had to knit it yourself. Today knitting is much more of a hobby, although I think it’s an art form, and some might say it becomes an obsession! When a new knitter looks at all of the yarn and patterns out there, it can seem overwhelming. But don’t let it get to you—even the most accomplished knitter was once a beginner,” says Kathleen Cubley, Editor of Knitting Daily.

Before You Start

There are several things that need to happen before anyone begins to learn to knit. Knitting Daily suggests a list of supplies for each new beginner. Learning specifics about yarn is essential when learning how to knit. Different types of needles are used to knit, along with different gauges, which measure the actual piece of knitting. Understanding yarn, needles and gauges are all critical when first learning how to knit.

Casting On

The technique used to get the first row of stitches on the needle is called casting on. When learning how to knit, there are several methods of casting on that need to be learned, but this eBook fully explains the “long-tail cast-on” method. This method can be used to make most projects. This cast-on begins with a slipknot, which is described in this eBook as well. There are also tips for practicing these methods of casting on.

The Knit Stitch

When knitting, people must learn to move stitches from their left-hand needle to their right-hand needle. This is how new rows of stitches are created. The knit stitch is essential to understand when learning how to knit. There are several different ways to do a knit stitch. One way to do the knit stitch is the English method, which is also called throwing. Another way to do the knit stitch is the Continental method, which is also called picking. Each of these two methods, are described in this free eBook.

Binding Off

The term binding off is also known as casting off. Binding off is when the last row of stitches are secured and will not unravel.

Joining New Yarn

When finished with a ball of yarn and wanting to add new yarn, it is important to learn how to join yarn. The method explained has great advantages, because it will have uninterrupted knitting rows.

OOPS! Fixing Common Mistakes

There are many different mistakes that can be made while learning how to knit. Even advance knitters make mistakes. The most common mistakes made while knitting are: unknitting, extra stitches and working the first stitch as two stitches. Unknitting is when someone unravels stitch by stitch. Extra stitches is when someone has more stitches in one row than another. Accidentally working the first stitch as two stitches is when the working yarn is thrown over the needle at the end of the row, front to back, instead of under the needle. These common mistakes can be corrected.

Your First Projects

When learning how to knit it is important to start on the appropriate projects for someone’s knowledge base on knitting. There are two projects listed here. One of the projects is making a scarf and the other is a dishcloth. Each of these projects will best fit the beginner’s knowledge of knitting.
