By: John Michael Jesse Welden, a veteran of the American Revolution, is credited as being the first settler of St. Albans. Since moving his family into a small log cabin surrounded by wilderness, the area has seen tremendous growth. In 1792, a route surveyed by Ira Allen turned St. Albans into a stopping place for travelers bound for Montreal. In 1851 John Smith, president of the Vermont and Canada Railroad, with the help of others rolled the first train into “Railroad City.” Over the years, the commercial base in St. Albans grew, many churches and schools were founded, and there was a sharp increase in population which led to St Albans becoming the seat of Franklin County.
