The Play - Steel Magnolias
Human beings are social creatures. Men and women share the bonds of holy matrimony and otherwise; men forge mystic fraternal bonds, blustery cigar-smoking rites, and football pools. Women have historically created their own avenues of society; to talk, to share recipes and joys and sorrows. They have convened in sitting rooms to embroider, participated in suffrage, congregated in quilting bees, and yes, found refuge in twentieth century beauty salons. In “Steel Magnolias” we see one such story. The participants have their own patois, unique interactions in the manner of contemporary women in the American South. This story takes place in the post-Civil Rights era, after the Summer of Love and disco and Watergate. These are distinct individual women, whose interactions reflect their history, growing up in a lush, bucolic Louisiana, shared experiences of early integrated universities and southern graciousness. This is their story, which is a microcosm of the universal story of love, support and sisterhood. Rose Bianco, Director.
Deena Beasley is available for interviews to discuss the wonderful play Steel Magnolias at the Renaissance Project now thru October 3, 2010.
