Sept. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Dunhurst children enjoyed a reflective start to the Autumn term following participation in 'peace day'.

On the 'International day of Peace' (21st September), which is officially recognised through the ringing of the UN's peace bell,  Dunhurst children took part in a variety of activities to learn the importance of peace and what peace represents to them. Every child made their own peace flag and wrote messages such as: 'peace one day saves lives'.

Other activities included: designing a peace wall-hanging for the school reception area and a 'buddy' day where pupils from years 1 - 3 came together to share experiences in cooking, juicing apples and helping out in the hop harvest at the school's 'Outdoor Work' area.

Dunhurst pupils also had a spring in their step following a dance workshop on Lindy Hopp. Years 7 and 8 experienced the fast-paced steps of the charlston and tap-influenced dance and enjoyed Lindy Hopp demonstrations from teacher Rosie Nash and workshop instructor Adeela Baig. The workshop not only introduced the children to new moves but also prepared them for auditions for an inter-school Youth Dance Platform next March.

Commenting on the start of term, Penny Watkins, Headteacher at Dunhurst said; "The children very much enjoyed International Peace day at school, it provided an opportunity for children to think about the consequence of conflict and the benefits of peace and creatively express their ideas. The day was very much in keeping with the school's 'Work of Each for Weal of All' motto.

Preparations for next year's Youth Dance Platform have already begun and workshops such as Lindy Hopp not only introduce the children to a whole new repertoire of moves but also provide them with an understanding of the history and culture that inspired these dances. Overall it has been a great start to the first half of this term."
