Hunter Boots - Fighting the Recession

It was reported that between June and August 2010, 4000 organisations were threatened with liquidation (Daily Telegraph, 2010) with some firms even entering bankruptcy.

Remarkably, Hunter avoided these issues and actually manage to gain an improvement in their financial position during the recession. The brand enjoyed superlative profit figures for 2009 - turnover reached £25.7 million which provided the company with a pre tax profit of £4.1 million, a record breaking set of figures for the company.

Many argue that it was the strength of the brand which enabled the hunter boots to continue to be a success during the recession. However, Hunter would argue a different story. Their workforce was reduced from 2,504 to 1,972 over the last 12 months. Production was also moved to China to ensure lower costs, Hunter ensure British methods and quality are still be used in the production. The Directors of Hunter also showed their dedication to supporting the brand by taking £200,000 pay cuts.

Alongside these actions, Hunter has also been very good at utilising their owner Lord Marland's contacts. Prime Minister David Cameron was persuaded by the Conservative minister to give a pair of the hunter boots to President Obama's daughters.

Another signal of the brands renewed strength is their newest collaboration with British design power house Jimmy Choo. The collaboration has made a collection that is 'stylish and practical' Adding this to their existing range, hunter boots now come in a diverse range of styles and functionalities.  Hunter hope to utilise these strengths to make 2011 another successful year.
