Sept. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- A new poll by the UK’s leading mobile phone comparison website has discovered that more than 1 in 4 people with a landline phone haven’t used it in the past six months, whilst two thirds of those who have explained that it was only for incoming calls.

The research was carried out by www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, in order to discover what impact mobile phones have had on the usage of landlines. 1,923 people with a landline in the UK were subsequently polled.

24% of the respondents said they only had a landline due to the fact they needed a phone line installed to get the internet, whilst 91% of all the respondents said they used their mobile phone for the majority of their phone calls.

Despite the fact that more than a quarter of people with a landline haven’t used it within the past 6 months, 89% said they thought there would always be a need for them. When asked to stipulate why, two thirds, 67%, said landlines would need to exist predominately for businesses.

31% felt one of the main reasons they wouldn’t be prepared to part with their landline completely is because friends and family had their phone number and may use it to try and get in touch. 26% also stated that utility companies and other services had their landline number and they wouldn’t want them not to be able to get in touch.

1 in 10, 9%, of those with a phone line installed said they didn’t actually have a telephone plugged in; the main reason for this being that they only wanted it for the internet.

84% of people said their landline had an answer phone service, but half of these, 49%, claimed to never check for messages. 34% have considered getting rid of their landline phone, and 68% said they could ‘easily live without it’.

Neil McHugh, co-founder of http://www.rightmobilephone.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“It’s fairly obvious that mobile phones were always going to have an impact on the use of landline phones, similar to how they have affected the usage of phone boxes, as previous research we carried out has shown.

“I really think the main reason people have them now, aside from in business, is in order to get the internet, especially as some packages offer evening and weekend calls for free. People have nothing to lose by having one, but some companies make customers sign up thinking they have the landline for free. This might be true for a set time, but line rental charges soon creep up, so people should be careful when signing up.”
