Follow on Google News | Horror Movie Screening for the Chilling Film "Cropsey" Comes to Central New JerseyFilmed by two filmmakers in their hometown of Staten Island, NY, Cropsey is a chilling documentary about a real life urban legend, which explores the mystery of five missing children and the actual "boogeyman" linked to their disappearance.
An Urban Legend that comes true, Cropsey is a chilling horror documentary that was shot by filmmakers Barbara Brancaccio and Joshua Zeman. Growing up on Staten Island, NY, Joshua and Barbara were always surrounded by stories of Cropsey. But to everyone's horror, the urban legend that started as a myth soon becomes a reality. Andre Rand, a former janitor at Staten Island's infamous Willowbrook State School for the mentally handicapped, was Cropsey. Rand had stayed on the property after Geraldo Rivera's horrific expose led to the school's closing, living with a group of former orderlies in the tunnels under the school and in the woods around it. Children started disappearing from town and Rand was ultimately sentenced for the kidnapping and murder of a 13-year-old with Down syndrome. 20 years pass and Rand is shuffled out of prison to stand trial for five other murders of long missing little girls. Zeman and Brancaccio decide to confront their childhood fears by exploring the shuttered Willowbrook, talking to people involved in the original case, and trying to land an interview with Rand himself. Rand continuously teases and taunts them with bizarre letters solidifying his status as the story's boogeyman. But is he? The evidence, the filmmakers discover, was and is wholly circumstantial. With horrifying details and beautifully shot footage, Zeman and Brancaccio manage to make a thriller and a doctoral dissertation in one fell swoop. Join filmmaker Barbara Brancaccio for a special viewing of this film, at The Refectory, 270 Woodbridge Ave., in Metuchen, NJ (one stop away from Edison, NJ) at 8pm on Saturday, October 2nd. Tickets for the event can be purchased at http://cropsyscreening.eventbrite.com or in person at The Raconteur, 431 Main St., Metuchen, NJ.
