Sept. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Percy Harvin now blames the black-out incident on August 19 on the medications that he was taking for migraines. During his hospitalization, it came to light that Harvin suffers from sleep apnea, a condition that stops a person’s breathing several times a night, sometimes for minutes at a time.

During his hospital stay, doctors performed a polysomnography, a sleep test to gain insight into his breathing and blood oxygen levels while he is asleep. During the night, his heart stopped beating eight times, up to ten seconds at a time. “Sleep studies are so critical, and unfortunately, they aren’t prescribed enough,” says Nashville sleep apnea dentist [], Dr. Don Lowrance, “Without that information, your diagnosis is just guess work.”

Harvin’s doctors are using CPAP to treat his sleep apnea. CPAP, which stands for Continuous Positive Airway Pressure, is the gold standard of sleep apnea treatment. It is hoped that by treating his sleep apnea, Harvin will no longer suffer from migraine headaches. “I would recommend that Percy Harvin see a neuromuscular dentist to see if his headaches are actually caused by TMJ disorder,” said Denver TMJ dentist [], Dr. Kevin Berry, “TMJ and sleep apnea go hand-in-hand. If he’s got sleep apnea, malocclusion could be the cause.” Dr. Berry treats both TMJ and sleep apnea using oral appliances.

Harvin is happy with his prognosis. “I’m just finally glad we got that simplified,” he said according to The Associated Press. “Just get sleep and eat right and hopefully get this turned around.”
