Sept. 28, 2010 - PRLog -- Cut

Out of the four C’s, the cut is most important because the cut of the diamond affects the cost and it also makes the diamond sparkle. However dazzling the diamond is all depends on the cut and the way light reflects off of it. Skilled professionals use exact proportions to cut the stone. In case if they are not careful, the diamond can easily deplete its brilliance, even if the color and clarity of the diamond are perfect. For example, if the stone is cut too shallow, light escapes from the sides, but if the stone is cut too deep, light escapes from the bottom. The cut of a diamond is often thought to be the same as the shape of the diamond but sometimes it is not possible. The cut affects the way light passes through the diamond, while the shape of the diamond is its physical shape. While looking at a diamond when you come across all different sides within the diamond and it’s all sparkly determines the cut of the diamond. Shape: If the diamond is round, that’s the shape. (Asscher Cut, Cushion Cut, Emerald Cut, Heart, Marquise, Oval, Pear, Princess Cut, Radiant, Round). However, the four most common diamond shapes are: Round (or brilliant), Emerald, Marquise and Pear. One must note to pick brilliance over size. Remember that the cut makes easier the brilliance of the diamond. The more brilliance, the size of the diamond decreases. If the stone is cut for size, it will exhaust its brilliance. There are different grades of cut that give guidelines for perfect selection:

Clarity

Diamond Clarity

Clarity refers to the presence of observing characteristics on blemishes as well as in the inclusions of the stone. For creating a diamond it is not an easy task as diamonds are not naturally grown clean. So it is obvious that diamonds contain flaws which are of two types i.e. inclusions and blemishes. Inclusions pertain to internal flaws that are bubbles, cracks and non-diamond minerals observed in diamond whereas blemishes refer to surface flaws which include scratches, pits and chips and some are created during the procedure of cutting mostly at the girdle. Those diamond that are found with very less or no inclusions and blemishes are considered as high valued diamonds compared to that having less clarity because they are exceptional. Diamonds are graded for clarity under 10x loupe magnification. They are graded as follows: Diamond completely without any flaws is termed as Fl (Flawless) or IF (Internally Flawless). If it has minute imperfections then it is considered VVS (Very Very Small inclusions) and minor imperfections then it is VS (Very Small inclusions) and SI (Small Inclusions) and then I (Imperfect).

Color

Diamond Color

All diamonds are almost always clear or white. The most transparent, clear, colorless diamonds are classified as D. Diamonds, range from being categorized as D to Z, as Z is still clear, but tainted with some color. They are marked by flipping over the diamond and screening the stone upside down on a non-reflected white background. Even if the diamond is colorless from the top where everyone sees it, but tainted at the bottom, it is still classified as tainted. Whereas usually the most popular diamonds are colorless but there are a few diamonds which possess color, which are not marked on the D to Z scale. However, few diamonds are blue, pink, black, orange, purple, yellow, etc. The system that grades colored diamonds is called the “fancy colored diamond grading system”. There are even fluorescent diamonds which can be viewed with the help of ultraviolet rays.
Carat

Diamond Carat

The word “carat” is derived from the carob seeds used by the people during ancient times in order to balance the scales. The procedure which forms a diamond occurs in very rare cases and the natural materials required are observed only in limited quantity. This insists that larger diamonds remain uncovered less often compared to smaller ones. Hence, large diamonds are very few possessing higher value per carat. Due to this reason price of a diamond increases as per its size. The carat of a diamond refers to the weight of the diamond. A 1 carat diamond is correspondent to 100 points. 150 points is a 1.5 carat diamond. Naturally, the heavier and larger the diamond is considered as one of the most expensive diamond.
