Sept. 27, 2010 - PRLog -- Honiara, Solomon Islands, Shift2Neutral partners with the Solomon Islands Carbon Project by signing a Memorandum of Agreement in a move to protect millions of hectares against Deforestation in the Solomon Islands.

Shift2Neutral will work closely with the Founder of the Solomon Islands Carbon Project, Mr Charles Stennett Kereau, to begin the key initiatives and drivers of the memorandum of agreement, in the protection of natural land and forests in the Solomon Islands, and to work together to cease the decline of the environment at local and national levels.

In the Solomon Islands there is uncontrolled cutting of trees and the loss of soils rich in humus which has resulted in the release of carbon into the atmosphere contributing to green house gases and accelerating global warming.

The Solomon Islands Carbon Project believe that linking local economic self-interest and the health of ecosystems is one way to ensure the conservation challenges facing the Solomon Islands. Through initiatives with the private sector, the Solomon Islands Carbon Project and Shift2Neutral will halt unsustainable deforestation and allow the local society to protect the ecosystems on which we all depend.

Shift2Neutral and the Solomon Islands Carbon Project believe this can be achieved with real benefits to local stakeholders. We must recognize the rights of indigenous peoples and the local communities involved, protect their native and indigenous environment and culture through mechanisms that provide assistance to them and the protection of their land.

Regardless of national or international policies, deforestation cannot be combated effectively unless local landowners and residents have a desire and need to protect the forests.  Through leadership in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) stemming from successful REDD+ programs can issues such as health, environment, food, education, bio diversity and culture be correctly addressed.

Through the conservation efforts of groups like the Solomon Islands Carbon Project and its founder Charles Stennett Kereau and that of Shift2Neutral can avoided deforestation strategy be put into practice and not just motherhood statements.
