Audi Touch navigation lets drivers write with fingertips

LOS ANGELES — No matter how costly the luxury car, drivers often are befuddled by having to peck through letters to use a navigation screen. Now Audi will let your finger do the walking.
The Audi Touch system, demonstrated here last week, shows how automakers still are trying to advance in-car nav systems even as they run into competition from high-end smartphones, which now often offer navigation functions and turn-by-turn directions at a fraction of the cost.

Audi's new A8 luxury flagship, going on sale in November, will have a standard feature for the navigation system that lets drivers write letters with their fingertip on a pad. Though not officially priced yet, the A8 is expected to sell for about $80,000.

How the touch system works:

If you want to find Broadway in any city, you would write the letter B with your fingertip on the touch pad on the car's center console. Then R, then O, then A — until the car recognizes the word.

Each letter appears on the navigation system on the dashboard as it is written.

The A8 still has both a traditional knob that lets you twist through the alphabet to pick letters on the screen and a voice-recognition system to say them.

The touch pad will work while the A8 is in motion. "There is an audible feedback feature so when you type a letter, the system will read it back to you so the driver doesn't have to look at the screen," spokesman Andrew Lipman says.

Other fancy touches:

•Back-seat drivers. Some long-wheelbase versions also will have a back-seat navigation screen for back-seaters to pick their destination rather than telling their driver.

•Google Earth. Starting next spring with another Audi model, the A7, a Google Earth satellite image overlay in the navigation system will let users see the actual buildings and terrain along their route.

Luxury Cars: The Motorist Choice Awards named Audi's A5 and A6 as the Best Sexy Styling and the Best Country Club Vehicles for 2010 in the Premium Brand category. The results stem from the information taken from more than 42,000 consumer surveys.

The Audi A5 coupe is a sports car designed to please drivers first with its driver-oriented cockpit, standard all-wheel drive, eight-speed "Tiptronic" transmission, and powerful engine. The A6 is the elegant one yet, being an Audi, has oomph to spare mixed in with various creature comforts.

The fifth annual Motorist Choice Awards added more criteria in making its determinations for this year's winners. Total cost of ownership, driving experience, fuel economy, and resale value were key factors. Overall, 15 new areas that buyers may utilize in their decision-making process toward buying a new car were added to the mix.

Consumer-automotive analysts IntelliChoice and automotive market research firm AutoPacific compiled and assembled the extensive data required for the 2010 Motorist Choice Awards.
