Washington Post Editor Created Sock Critters
to Beat the Stress of the Housing Crisis.

CONCORD, CA, March 1, 2010—C&T Publishing http://www.ctpub.com/  is excited to introduce a new addition to their Stash Books imprint from Washington Post Graphics Editor, Brenna Maloney, called Socks Appeal—16 Fun & Funky Friends Sewn from Socks. http://www.stashbooksblog.com/ It’s a how-to book that shows readers how to turn ordinary socks into adorable bunnies, kittens, hamsters, turtles, penguins and more.

The book idea grew from Maloney’s unbearable stress level at her former job. “The Post had assigned me to cover the recession and housing crisis. It was terribly depressing, but one way I was able to unwind after work was to make sock bunnies. I had been making them for baby gifts for years. One evening I was scrambling to finish a bunny and I accidently cut off one of his ears. Instead of starting over, I just lopped off the other ear and made him into a penguin. My kids loved it and it became a game—what could mommy make from a sock?  As my Post assignment grew more stressful, the only thing that seemed to help was to go down to my sewing lair after the kids were in bed and try to create something new from a sock to surprise them in the morning.”

The therapeutic effects of crafting are immeasurable. The stress management website, www.Dealwithstress.com, lists “Creative Crafts” as the #1 way to cope with and reduce stress. Medical studies have shown that there are physical, psychological, and spiritual benefits from having an active interest in crafting. One study of 30 female heart patients, reported in the American Medical Association Journal, showed a significant decrease in heart rate, blood pressure, and perspiration rate while the subjects completed a simple craft project. http://www.socksappeal.org/socksappeal/Video.html
Socks Appeal http://www.stashbooksblog.com/products/socks-appeal/  is the perfect way to reap the anti-stress benefits of creating handmade crafts. Brenna Maloney’s writing is clever and witty and the book’s projects are easy to make and irresistible when finished.
