Follow on Google News | Inaugural Swansea Bay 10K winner to lead free road running seminarCurrent UK and former world marathon record holder Steve Jones will be back in Swansea this weekend to participate in an open seminar ahead of the 30th anniversary of the (Admiral) Swansea Bay 10K.
By: City and County of Swansea Steve won the inaugural Swansea Bay 10K in 1981 and went on to win it another three times in 1983, 1987 and 1989. In 1983 he ran the Bristol 10k in the morning, drove to Swansea and then won the Swansea Bay 10k in the afternoon. His 2:07:13, achieved in the Chicago Marathon in 1985, still stands today as the UK and Welsh record. Altogether, Steve ran in 18 marathons, winning five, including the 1985 London marathon. Nigel Jones, Special Events Manager and Admiral Swansea Bay 10K Race Director, said, “The seminar should prove to be a great question and answer session and is a rare chance to quiz the great Steve Jones who is still the UK’s Marathon record holder and also our only four time winner.” The Run Britain Athlete Seminar starts at 6.30pm in the Village Hotel and is free, but there are only 50 places available, on a first come basis. Those wishing to attend should call 02920 649845. Nigel continues, “It is also great to note that Swansea will be hosting a Road Running Seminar and the first ever pilot UKA Race Director’s Course this Saturday. The Road Running Seminar at 5.00pm is an open forum for those interested in running to discuss the challenges for road running in the future whilst the UKA Race Director’s course will aim to develop a clear way forward for race organisation in the future and will use the Admiral Swansea Bay 10K to showcase best practice for road race events. Anyone interested in attending should get in touch with Welsh Athletics on 02920 644870.” The Admiral Swansea Bay takes place this Sunday (26 September) along Oystermouth Road and Swansea Promenade from St Helen’s Rugby Ground to Mumbles. The junior races begin at 11am with the main 10K race starting at 1.00pm and expected to last until about 2.30pm. Spectators are encouraged to show their support for this year’s runners with event organisers urging people to arrive early as it will be busy and road closures will be in place from around 12.00pm.
