There has been a lot of talk on  the use of mantras to change your luck The views  on this issue are polar extremes While on one side  people say that by doing puja and reciting mantras you can ward off the  evil effects or the  occurrence of a bad or ill timed event and  conversely make good (desired or the preferred things to happen).  There is another set of people who claim that everything on the  earth is pre-destined and no amount of mantras can change your destiny -- and the  good /the bad/the evil or whatever - if it is fated it would definitely happen!!

Concept of Left Brain

Scientists have long postulated that our brain consists of two parts -- the left brain and the right brain. Some others have talked about conscious mind and the unconscious mind Still others have labeled these terms as synonyms.

Scientists have  stipulated that all information received by us first is analyzed by the conscious mind (the right brain) If the information is not perceived as logical or rational it is discarded (thrown away)  by the  conscious mind . The information (or the data that passes the conscious mind travels to the sub-conscious mind (left brain) and stays there

Scientists have  also hypothesized that the left brain is multiple times more powerful than the  right brain and is the major factor in shaping our response pattern, personality etc.

Conditioning Process

We typically use the 'cause and effect' syndrone -- we store a response pattern in our left brain -- this response pattern is the translation  of a defined motor mechanism -- directing our system to execute a physical action -- instructions going from the  central nervous system to the different parts of the body

For example -- If some body tries to hit us our hands go up to save us fromthe attacker -- more as a reflex action This implies that we percieve teh action of somebody trying to hit us and have stored a pattern in our left brain as a response / effect to teh stimuli provided to us through our action

Most personality development programs aim to reach your left brain and leave a set of instructions there -- such that you may respond to a situation in a particular (preferred manner) Be it a stress management program or a leadership development program -- all of these training programs try to reach the powerful subconscious mind in a covert or an overt manner and make tall claims of their effectiveness (which is really measured in terms of their ability to reach the  subconscious and implant instructions there)

Typically we are taught that we should free our minds of all impurities and focus on reciting pure  and virtuous texts -- exhort the gods to grant us our wishes. People go to temples and worship the idols -- all this assume that your conscious mind is at rest and your sub conscious mind is free to take in new sermons or the puja that is being performed by you For example


You may be praying to god " Give me courage to face the difficult situation" This implies that you are preparing your subconscious mind to issue instructions to conscious mind to act in a particular manner when ever the defined situation occurs -- Is this any different from what happens in a puja
