Local commercial printer gives free seminars to graphic design students from nearby university.

Graphic design students are learning the online world, but knowledge about printing is still needed for the students to succeed. One printer is addressing this by having students tour the plant and learn about paper, press requirements and bindery.

Sept. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Capitol Press, in partnership with instructors from UCLA, is currently offering free seminars for graphic design students. In these seminars the students learn about different paper types, how to prepare art files for litho, digital, and on-demand printing, bindery operations and letterpress techniques. Also discussed are different color spaces like cmyk and RBG and how they affect the printing process.

Kirk Harney, VP Sales for Capitol Press comments, “I understand the problem. The schools aren’t really teaching print production because the future is seen as online and not so much in print. Maybe that’s what people think, but a lot of jobs still get printed and the students need to have knowledge about how to get those jobs done.”

One area of focus in the seminars is paper because the terms used by the students and customers to describe what the job needs are not always the same as those used by the printer. Since the type of paper greatly influences how the finished job will look, students must know how to talk to clients about which paper is right for the job.

"It's really satisfying for me to see the students' eyes light up when they see a large printing press for the first time. For many of these students this is their first look inside a printing plant", said Mr. Harney. "I've been printing for 40 years and it's still exciting to me".

The team at Capitol Press offers free seminars to groups of students who need to learn about printing. Visit http://www.capitolpress.com for more information about Capitol Press, or call Kirk Harney at 310-577-6606 to take advantage of these seminars.
