Sept. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Wilmington, Delaware – During its August 10th meeting, the Delaware Humane Association (DHA) Board of Directors voted unanimously to construct a new facility at its current Wilmington site.  Previously, the Board anticipated a move to The Hermitage property, a former dairy farm at the corner of routes 40 and 896 in Glasgow under a curatorship agreement with New Castle County.  The Board’s anticipated move to the Hermitage site was predicated on the sale of its current property at A Street in Wilmington.  The proceeds from such a sale would be necessary for DHA to effectuate the full capital needs at the Hermitage property.  Such a sale proved to be impractical.  According to Board President, Daniel Cruce, “The Board and our community need to move forward, as our need for a new facility is paramount.  We look forward to engaging our community to make this new facility a reality as soon as possible.”

At this time, the no kill animal shelter plans to remain at its 701 A Street location, and build a new shelter there.  Many of DHA’s stakeholders are happy that the organization will remain in the City of Wilmington, especially given that DHA is the only animal shelter within the city limits.  “The Delaware Humane Association is a remarkable community organization that saves the lives of hundreds of animals each year and educates all of us about the importance of providing a good home for animals,” said Mayor James M. Baker. “I am so pleased to learn that the DHA will remain with us in Wilmington,” said Mayor Baker. “We have always been proud that the DHA considers our city their home, and we will continue to support their good work on behalf of pets and their owners.  If you don’t know about the DHA and what they and their volunteers do for this community, I urge you to contact them, visit the shelter and become part of a great effort to support animals and the families that love them.”

The Board has authorized the implementation of a capital campaign, to begin this fall.  To support the project, please contact Patrick Carroll, Executive Director, at (302) 571-8171, x302 or pcarroll@dehumane.org.
