Sept. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Green Roof Blocks, an environmentally progressive company based in St. Louis, features two calculators located on their website, www.greenroofblocks.com. One of the calculators quantifies storm water management values, the other assists green roof customers to calculate the cost of purchasing a green roof.

The Green Roof Storm Water Management Tool has cells designated for user input data with instructions that pop up in information balloons as the user rolls the cursor across each cell.  The user friendly format allows a green roof designer to instantly see the effect each of the green roof components has on storm water retention.

The price calculator allows the user to input the dimensions they are considering into the fields and the calculator breaks down estimated costs for a green roof. Variables include selecting between the two modular green roof systems, building height, complexity of installation, and projected delivery date. Simply calculate the area of the roof section and input the result in the “square feet” field. By entering B for Green Roof Blocks or P for Green Paks in the second field, the user may compare prices of both of the green roof systems the company offers. Next, enter the number of stories above ground in the third field. The level difficulty can be adjusted in the fourth field by selecting E for easy, M for moderate, or D for difficult. The final field is in mm/dd/yyyy format to set delivery date. Once the fields are filled an approximate cost breakdown will display below. It is a general pricing guide and the prospective green roof customer can contact Green Roof Blocks for a quote for their specific project.

Green Roof Blocks, located in Lake St. Louis, Missouri, manufactures self contained, portable units that can be arranged and rearranged as the building owner sees fit. The Green Roof Blocks module is a 24" x 24" container fabricated of high grade anodized aluminum. Rubber pads are fastened to the bottom serving both to protect the roofing surface and to allow drainage under the Green Roof Blocks. The Green Paks module is a fabric planter system made from knitted high density polyethylene.

The Green Paks system is less expensive than the aluminum Green Roof Blocks system and the flexibility of the fabric module makes them well suited for irregular shaped and radius roof areas. Only Green Roof Blocks, however, can be pre-grown offsite and delivered with mature vegetation to produce an instant green roof. Green Paks must be positioned on the roof prior to planting and allowed to grow in place.

Both systems are planted with durable and drought resistant sedums in four inches of proprietary growing medium custom blended to sustain plants for the life of the system.
