Follow on Google News | How do you make a Buick speak German? Is Buick becoming bi-lingual? Where are Buicks actually made? The Buick Regal has gone foreign.
By: Peter J. Marr After hearing a recent commercial for the Regal with a tag of - "born in Germany", I had to see how they could make this claim. To the best of my knowledge, the Buicks were all designed and made in the USA. My horizon was quickly expanded. The new Buick Regal is now produced in Ruesselsheim, Germany. It is made on a production line that makes both Opels and Buick, among others, that share the new Epsilon II platform. I am sure this new platform will save GM some money, but to make a Buick a German car is like making a Volvo in China. Oh, that's right, Volvo is now owned by a Chinese company. Can't wait to hear the Volvo GPS in Mandarin Chinese. That should at least give me an excuse for being lost even when I have a GPS telling me where to go, step by step. This new Epsilon II platform isn't only used by Opel and Buick. You can also get a Vauxhall Insignia, Buick LaCrosse, Saab 9-5 on the Epsilon II. There are also plans to make a Chevrolet Malibu and Chevrolet Epica on this same platform. One of the great features of the Epsilon II platform is that you can make it either in a long wheel base or short wheel base version. Also it is adaptable for both front wheel drive and all-wheel drive. GM has even announced the development of the next version which has been dubbed the Super Epsilon II which will be for full size car applications. Some of the cars they are considering for this upcoming platform are the Holden Commodore, Buick Park Avenue, Cadillac XTS and Chevrolet Impala. According to GM, however, the Buick Regal is coming back to North America in the 1st quarter of 2011. Not all the way to the USA, but at least to Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. At least this means that Buick won't be shipping buying any Buick accessories in Germany. I would hope that these jobs come back to the USA.
