The Christian religion is established as the religion of the state of South Carolina in its own constitution.

Sept. 14, 2010 - PRLog -- Contrary to the myth of separation of church and state which is found nowhere in the United States Constitution, states could set up a religion they established and endorsed. The provision was that the state could not use its power to force a religion but to establish or endorse a religion was no problem.

South Carolina is one of several that did just that but, they even went further than that. If a person was irreligious they were not eligible to hold any office of the public. You may find that last part difficult to believe but it is a matter of historical record. Please take a look for yourself!
