By: Latino Democrats of LA County The Latino Democrats of LA County call upon Lt. Governor Maldonado to sign AB 900 immediately without delay. AB 900, written by Assemblymember Kevin De Leon, will allow property owners in the City of Bell to be reimbursed for illegally overcharged property taxes. This bill will bring a small amount of relief and justice to the long suffering residents of the City of Bell. Robert Olivarez, President of the Latino Democrats of LA County, states “Assemblymember De Leon is a strong and effective leader for all the people of California. We applaud his legislation to help the property owners of the City of Bell. De Leon will bring this leadership experience to the CA Senate in 2010 and we will all be better for it.” The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the recently appointed Lt. Governor, Maldonado, is planning to sign AB 900 in his capacity as acting Governor while Governor Schwarzenegger is on a trade mission to Asia. Maldonado is reportedly planning to hold a “bill signing ceremony” in front the Bell city hall this coming Monday at 9am. Olivarez further states, “We urge Lt. Governor Maldonado to sign AB 900 without delay when the bill reaches his office. We also urge Maldonado not to use the City of Bell to play politics. Maldonado should be overseeing the disaster relief efforts in San Bruno and providing leadership in Sacramento as we continue without a budget. He should not be wasting state or local city resources flying around California with thinly veiled official bill signing ceremonies. Maldonado is clearly trying to revive his failing campaign for Lt. Governor.” “Appointed Lt. Governor Maldonado, wants to paint himself a friend of the Latino communities of Los Angeles County. Maldonado is a corporate agri-business Republican who has never done anything to support the people of East and South East Los Angeles. His last trip to East LA was in November 2009 to pass out turkeys while a press conference was held to announce his appointment as Lt. Governor.” “The Latino Democrats want to be very clear that AB 900 is good legislation and we are happy that the Governor and Lt. Governor are reported to support this legislation. On the other hand, cynical political campaigning should not be done on the back or with the backdrop of the long suffering residents of the City of Bell.” Robert Olivarez, President The Latino Democrats of LA County (562) 653-6145 democrats@latinodems.org # # # The Latino Democrats of LA County are a fully chartered Democratic organization operating in Los Angeles County.
