Dr. Samuel Lam Featured in New York Times on Subject of Teenage Botox Use

Sept. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- A recent article in the New York Times titled, “SKIN DEEP; This Teenage Girl Uses Botox. And, No, She's Not Alone”, featured Dr. Samuel Lam, M.D., F.A.C.S., a facial plastic surgeon located in Dallas, Texas.  Dr. Lam, founder  of Lam Facial Plastics, was quoted within the article in reference to a procedure he performed on Phu Pham, a 19 year old San Antonio, Texas resident that underwent Botox injections to narrow a bulging jaw muscle.  The article discussed the increasing incidence of teenagers and young adults using Botox procedures for cosmetic reasons.

Dr. Samuel Lam has performed over one hundred procedures for jaw reduction utilizing Botox, although most patients were older than Mr. Pham.  He also indicated that he has performed other Botox procedures on patients in their late teens and twenties for various reasons and is not opposed to the procedure.  In addition to cosmetic purposes, Botox is used to treat certain medical conditions involving facial muscles, including neuromuscular and eye disorders, such as abnormal twitching or problems involving the temporomandibular joint.  As Dr. Lam explains, however, even those with an underlying medical issue often opt for the procedure for aesthetic reasons.

Although there is some controversy over whether utilizing Botox in the treatment of teens and young adults is warranted, Dr. Samuel Lam is not opposed to the treatment, dependent on an individual’s motivation for the procedure and his or her maturity level.  As he explained to the NY Times, “A lot of teenagers tease each other about things that as adults we may not consider as important.”  While teenagers undergoing nose jobs appears to be an acceptable practice, other procedures may not be viewed in a similar way.  According to Dr. Lam, “our goal as plastic surgeons is to provide patients with options for enhancing certain aspects of their appearance that cause them pain, whether due to medical conditions or personal issues.  As long as the decision is a well-thought out one made by a mature individual, the actual procedure, whether it be a nose job or Botox injection, shouldn’t make a difference assuming it is deemed safe.”

Dr. Lam offers Botox treatments  at his Texas facial plastic surgery center, Lam Facial Plastics.  He also offers additional plastic surgery procedures that appeal to young adults, including rhinoplasty, otoplasty and Asian eyelid surgery, which creates creases in the eyelids of individuals of Asian descent.  Dr. Lam is considered a leader and pioneer in the field of facial plastic surgery and has been invited to speak at medical conferences and symposiums around the world.  To date, he has given over 100 lectures, and has also authored five medical books and numerous scientific papers.  Dr. Lam also shares his plastic surgery expertise on the radio and was most recently featured in a radio show broadcast on stations in Austin, Buffalo, Denver, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Memphis, Norfolk, Portland and Wichita .
