| Where have i heard that before? How often do you see a film, watch a TV ad, or catch a theme tune and think “where have I heard that before?”. At this year’s Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts you will be sure to catch something that makes you think one of those things.
By: City and County of Swansea At this year’s Swansea Festival of Music and the Arts you will be sure to catch something that makes you think one of those things. The Philharmonia Orchestra’s concert on 16 October features a programme of music that will be familiar for many reasons. Their first item, Sibelius’s Suite: Pelleas and Melisande, will be one that has you scratching your head. The opening movement of the suite is very familiar to viewers as the opening theme of the BBC’s long-running monthly astronomy programme The Sky At Night, presented by Patrick Moore. Following this, Greig’s Piano Concerto in A Minor, is a piece that crops up all over the place. Way back in 1945 - for those of you who can remember - it was Ann Todd who played it in her role as a young concert pianist in the film The Seventh Veil. It was also used in the 1997 films Lolita and “The Adventures of Milo and Otis” and was incorporated into the number ‘Rosemary’ In the world of commercials it has been used by Nike, and was featured in a 2008 Range Rover commercial. Part of the concerto was also used in a series of the British “Bisto Aah Nights” adverts in 2006 – in which many people vowed to stay home more often for family dinners. It has also shown up in TV shows Twin Peaks, the X-Files and in the 80’s series Beauty and the Beast. Probably it’s best known use of all was in the Morecambe and Wise Christmas Show of 1971 with Eric Morecambe playing the piece wrongly and an irate Andre Previn admonishing him for playing ‘all the wrong notes’, only to be countered by Eric Morecambe’s immortal line that he was in fact “playing all the right notes – but not necessarily in the right order!” The recital on 12 October by Welsh Harpist, Catrin Finch, has a couple of things to listen out for. Debussy’ Did you enjoy the 1996 film Shine – based on the life of pianist David Helfgott? Well Rachmaninov’ Thomas Trotter plays two Wagner pieces in his recital on 11 October, Wagner’s Ride of the Valkyries is recognised by almost everyone and has been used extensively. One of the most familiar times was during the film Acopalypse Now. Thomas’ second Wagner piece is Evening Star from his opera Tanhaüser. Interestingly this turned up way back in 1943 in an American comedy film with the unlikely title of Hi Diddle Diddle, in which the femme fatale of the 1910s 20s and 30s, a Polish silent film actress called Pola Negri, made one of her last film appearances. She was one of the most popular actresses of her era and certainly the richest woman in the movie industry at the time, living in a palace in Los Angeles modelled after the White House. Her affairs with Charlie Chaplin and Rudolph Valentino ensured that she remained in the public eye! So, if you are attending any of the concerts during the Festival - this year between 7 and 17 October, listen out to see if you can recognise some of these - or maybe find some different ones. All Festival Tickets will be available from; The Taliesin Art Centre Box Office on 01792 602060 for Taliesin events and at the Grand Theatre Box Office on 01792 475715 for all other events.
