Sept. 1, 2010 - PRLog -- The Apollo Bramwell Hospital in Moka, Mauritius, (www.apollobramwell.mu)  the 200-bed healthcare venture between British American Investment and India's Apollo Hospitals Group, has just completed its first year of operation.
“We are indeed creating history,” said BA Investment Chairman Dawood Rawat. “Our commitment to the quality of care we provide has successfully positioned our hospital to serve Mauritius and the region for many years to come.”
Apollo Bramwell Hospital provides the full array of services expected of a Super Specialty Tertiary Care Hospital of international standards. It offers the unique combination of “High Tech and High Touch” - finest technology and medical expertise available worldwide coupled with the human touch of Tender Loving Care (TLC).
The anniversary was marked by a cake-cutting ceremony at the hospital by Mrs Preeta Reddy, Managing Director of Apollo Hospitals Group and daughter Apollo Chairman, Dr Pratap Reddy.
In a tele-call from India, Dr Reddy congratulated all staff at the gathering: “I am proud we have successfully established pioneering benchmarks in healthcare in Mauritius and the region. Apollo Bramwell is really the Kohinoor of the Apollo network – thanks to the vision of my friend Dawood Rawat.”
Set up with investment of $80 million, the hospital employs expert staff offering various specialised healthcare services in its strategic business unit called ‘Centres of excellence’, namely: Heart, Kidney and Urology, Neuroscience, Eye, Diabetology and Endocrinology, Bone and Joint, Health and Wellness, and Woman and Child.
In a busy first year, Apollo Bramwell Hospital, with its world-class mix of advance technology and experienced staff, has become a preferred healthcare option. More than 100,000 lab tests, over 40,000 outpatients and 20,000 inpatients from Mauritius and abroad were treated, while more than 17,000 surgeries were carried out during the period. Among these, over 1,000 were carried out for the very first time on the island.
Dr Damodaran Veerasamy, general surgeon at ABH, performed quite a few of them.
“A 30-year-old man had been suffering from severe abdominal and chest pain for the past three years after a car accident. A CT scan discovered an obstructed diaphragmatic hernia. He underwent emergency surgery during which his whole stomach as well as four feet of intestine were found inside his left chest. The hernia was repaired and the stomach and intestine were put back in their place. Now the patient is doing well, without any pain,” Dr Damodaran said.
This year also marks Apollo Bramwell Hospital’s collaboration with the Energy Division of British American Investment to set up a comprehensive management plan toaffirm its commitment as a green and eco-friendly company and to support the Maurice Ile Durable project. This is an initiative of the Mauritian government to promote eco-friendly and sustainable projects.
The most visible of the initiatives is the installation of a small wind turbine to generate power for the hospital’s external lighting.
Projects are bubbling at ABH – coming up for the second year are stem cell therapy and regenerative medicine, In vitro fertilisation and renal transplant programmes.
