Local Civic Leader Honored With Non-profit Foundation

Aug. 31, 2010 - PRLog -- The Clarissa Manuel Foundation was founded to prevent further deterioration of the community and juvenile delinquency through educational enrichment programs. The foundation will focus on three areas to reach their goal- Educational Academic Awareness, Financial Independence, and Physical & Mental Well-Being. By focusing on these areas, the foundation will provide tools for the community to thrive in three of the most important parts of life: education, finance and health.

Clarissa Manuel was a community activist in the Long Beach area. Manuel worked for 35 years with the Long Beach Community Improvement League, the Long Beach School District and the Health Department. She is a Golden Life member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She is a Silver Life Member of the NAACP. And she was active with many other organizations in the Long Beach area including the Black Managers Association and the Long Beach/Mombasa Sister Cities organization. Manuel passed away June 20, 2009. The foundation was created in 2010 in her honor by friends and colleagues. Board members include Doris Topsy-Elvord, the city’s first African American Vice Mayor and Gwen Mathews, Assistant Superintendent, Long Beach Unified School District.

The kick-off event will be held at King’s Fish House, 100 W Broadway, Long Beach, CA 90802 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Hors d’oeuvres and cocktails will be available.
