NSCS Awards Fall Semester at Sea Scholarship to College of Charleston Student

Aug. 30, 2010 - PRLog -- Alexandra DeLone is the recipient of a $7,000 Scholar at Sea scholarship to be used toward her tuition for the Semester at Sea program.
DeLone’s exceptional essay submitted to The National Society of Collegiate Scholars (NSCS), an honor society to which she belongs, earned her the scholarship.

Partnering with the Semester at Sea program, NSCS presents five $2,000 scholarships each summer semester and one $7,000 scholarship for the fall and spring semesters. The University of Virginia academically sponsors the Semester at Sea program and grants credit from more than 70 courses.

DeLone is a native of Camp Hill, PA. She is a junior majoring in Psychology at the College of Charleston and is also part of the Honors College.

“We’re proud to provide this scholarship to Alexandra to help her participate in such an enriching program,” said Stephen E. Loflin, Executive Director and founder of NSCS. “Her outstanding application earned her the opportunity to learn in a campus as rich in diversity as each port has to offer.”

The Semester at Sea program allows students to visit nearly a dozen countries while studying on a shipboard campus. Students will experience different cultures and learn about global diversity as they continue their education and work closely with other students from different backgrounds.

“Semester at Sea is such a rewarding experience for college students,” said Loflin.” We strive to open doors and create opportunities for our members to become active, engaged citizens of the world. The Scholar at Sea scholarship is only one way we encourage our members to grow from studying abroad.”

DeLone will have four to six days at each port and will be visiting a total of eleven countries on three continents. She is eager to immerse herself in the cultures and history of each country.

“Semester at Sea is more than classroom learning,” said DeLone. “The people and experiences of eleven different nations are unbelievable learning opportunities. At each port, I plan to participate in excursions that allow me to learn about the people. The cultural insights the service opportunities will provide are intriguing and life altering.”
